Foundry Sand That Performs the Same Way With Every Casting

A foundry runs on sand it can predict. Custom Abrasives supplies industrial silica sand to foundry customers from our production facilities in Louisiana and Mississippi, delivered by our own fleet so your molds and cores are never waiting on a load.

The Basics of Foundry Sand

Foundries use silica sand to form the molds and cores that shape molten metal into castings. The sand has to hold its shape under heat and handling, release the casting cleanly, and give a consistent surface finish. Most foundries specify sand by grain size distribution, silica purity, moisture, and loss on ignition, and many add limits on iron and calcium content. Every foundry is different, and your own sand specification should always lead the selection.

What Determines the Right Sand?

The right sand starts with your metal and your process. Ferrous and non-ferrous castings, large and small castings, and clay-bonded and chemically bonded systems all place different demands on the sand.

From there, four properties decide how well it performs: grain size and distribution, purity, grain shape, and moisture. Finer sand generally gives a smoother casting surface, while coarser sand lets gases escape more easily. Cleaner sand with fewer contaminants helps keep results consistent from batch to batch.

Matched to Your Equipment and Process

Sand that arrives dry and consistent is easier to store, convey, and mix. We look at:

  • How the sand will be received: dry bulk, bulk bag, and 50 lb bag delivery utilizing our own company-owned fleet
  • Your storage and silo capacity
  • Your sand preparation and reclamation system
  • Your binder system and mixing equipment

Cost Per Casting, Not Price Per Ton

The lowest price per ton does not always give the lowest cost per casting. Consistent sand can bring total cost down by:

  • Keeping results steady from load to load
  • Helping control binder consumption
  • Reducing rework and scrap tied to sand quality
  • Keeping your line running with dependable inventory and direct delivery
